Register now to join NC Catch for the debut of the African Americans in North Carolina Seafood exhibit. The heartfelt NC Catch initiative, shines a much-deserved light on the vital role Black individuals play in the state's rich seafood heritage.
From the colonial era onward, North Carolina’s seafood industry has thrived thanks to the skills and dedication of a diverse workforce, including a significant African American presence in major fisheries such as menhaden, shrimp, and blue crab. Showcasing a legacy of expertise and resilience that continues to shape the industry today, the exhibit highlights contributions and experiences of harvesters, processors, retailers, chefs, and others. The project brings together oral histories, photography and storytelling to celebrate the tapestry of individuals who have made North Carolina seafood a culinary treasure.
This landmark project aims to deepen our understanding and appreciation for the profound impact of Black communities on our state's seafood heritage. Let's celebrate the past, honor the present, and inspire the future of this vital industry together!
Please also join NC Catch for the NC Catch Summit 2025 March 10 (the next day) in Morehead City to learn more about the state's seafood industry and how you can help preserve local seafood and coastal heritage. Register for that event at https://nccatchsummit2025.eventbrite.com.
