NC Chef Ambassador John Mallette owns and operates Southern Breeze Seafood, a retail and wholesale market in Sneads Ferry, NC. Under the Southern Breeze brand name, John has created a line of quality seafood breaders and spice blends, as well as a new Bloody Mary Mix.
Captain John is also a commercial fisherman, charter boat captain, and a true Ambassador for NC Seafood. Operating as Southern Breeze, he focuses on sustainable fishing practices to protect fish populations John was born and raised in Topsail Island and has logged over 20 years of experience fishing the waters of North Carolina and has also fished all through the Caribbean, Hawaii, Australia, Costa Rica, Panama, Bermuda, and the entire Eastern Seaboard.
If you have anything to do with seafood in North Carolina, you probably already know John Mallette. And if you don’t know Captain John yet, you should! He has a deep appreciation and passion for everything NC Seafood.
He is a natural teacher and promoter of traditional North Carolina foodways, and seafood preparations. He will tell anyone who will listen about the goodness of jumpin’ mullet as a delicious, cost-effective seafood protein - not just a bait fish!. He advocates for LOCAL any way he can to preserve our heritage and fishing communities. And he can break down a massive tuna like nobody’s business!
As a prominent member of the seafood community, Captain John is a representative for the Division of Marine Fisheries appointed by Governor Stein, a Seafood Ambassador for the NC Department of Agriculture’s Got to Be NC program, a former Board Member for NC Catch, part of NC Catch’s The African American Experience in North Carolina Seafood project,, and now one of NC Catch’s esteemed Chef Ambassadors.
